Jim Penman started a part-time gardening business to get him through uni. He launched a full-time mowing business in 1982 with a $24 investment. Jim’s Mowing is now the largest franchise chain in Australia.

Jim’s Group has over 4,650 franchisees across more than 50 divisions in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom, and a turnover of around $500 million.

How Jim’s Group got to where it is today

“The idea was to put a system together that will be extremely attractive to franchisees. And I didn’t really think much of it. When I first started off, somebody said to me, you know, what, do you think we could achieve by this thing? And I say, Well, if it goes really well, maybe one day I could have 100 franchisees. We’re now 4640 odd, counting and rising. So it worked out rather better than I thought.”

“Even today, I actually personally read every poor review that comes into Jim’s group, every single one. And there are 1000s and 1000s a year, every single one I read and do something about. So when I started basically, I wanted a system that will be so great for franchisees that I could demand they give great service.”

The key ingredients that makes Jim’s Group service great

“We have a small fee for every lead provider. Now what that means is that they still pay for the lead, even if they don’t actually get the job, which means there’s an incentive to keep on trying to the customer and try to convert them. And we found that by doing that, we actually increased the actual conversion rate dramatically, we get 50% more actual jobs coming out of the same number of leads because the incentive is there.”
